Matchmakers See Rising Demand as UK Dating App Usage Drops

Dating app fatigue continues to reshape the UK industry, with usage across major platforms falling 16% since 2024, according to Ofcom data reported in late 2024 and echoed in 2026 analyses. Tinder alone lost over 500,000 UK users in that period, contributing to broader disengagement amid burnout from endless swiping, ghosting, and low-quality matches.

As singles seek alternatives, investor interest is shifting toward personalized matchmaking services, particularly those led by women. Approximately 90% of UK personalized matchmaking agencies are female-owned or led, with women also taking on more leadership roles in app-based companies. These services emphasize safety, emotional intelligence, compatibility assessment, and long-term outcomes over high-volume engagement tactics common in swipe apps.

A report from Business Recruitment highlights this trend: while large dating apps generate many initial connections, matchmaking platforms report significantly higher success rates in forming lasting relationships. Matchmakers produce fewer introductions but focus on curated, vetted pairings, often yielding better retention and satisfaction. The UK matchmaking market supports around 1.3 million users across roughly 1,400 services, valued at £422 million and growing at 8% annually. Globally, the online dating sector – including apps and matchmaking – is projected to surpass £13 billion by 2030, driven partly by hybrid models.

Industry experts argue that the future lies in combining human expertise with AI support rather than relying solely on algorithms. Human matchmakers offer nuanced understanding of personality, values, and intentions—areas where AI still falls short—while AI can enhance screening, compatibility scoring, or administrative tasks.
