App Annie Releases Analysis Marking 10 Years of the iOS App Store

App Annie

App data company App Annie has published commentary and analysis to mark 10 years of the iOS App Store.

Their report states that Netflix, Spotify and Pandora Radio are the top three apps by consumer spend of all time.

Tinder is the 5th highest, ranking just above Japanese messenger LINE and Chinese online video platform iQiyi.

The social and entertainment focus is notable, given that productivity apps were topping the charts back in 2010: ‘DocumentstoGo’, ‘Logmein Ignition’ and Google’s ‘Quickoffice’ were 1st, 3rd and 7th respectively by consumer spend that year.

The USA has had more downloads (40+ billion) and more spend ($36+ billion) than any other country in total.

China, Japan and the UK come 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively on both measures.

In App Annie’s commentary on the year 2012, it is noted: “Dating apps Badoo and Zoosk became top consumer-spend-generating apps in 2012.

“Over the coming years, they were joined by the likes of Tinder, Grindr and Lovoo to make Dating one of the most lucrative app categories.”

In the UK, five of the top 10 non-gaming apps by all time revenue were dating apps. These were Tinder, Match.com, Badoo, Zoosk and POF.

Year-to-date in 2018, Chinese video platform Tik Tok is the most downloaded app. The service claims 150 million daily active users in China.
