Happn founder Didier Rappaport recently sat down with City A.M. to talk about where the dating app is and what the team’s plans are for the coming year.

The location-based app, which was founded back in 2014, aims to blur the boundary between offline interactions and online matching, by showing users people they have passed in real life.

And Rappaport revealed that the dating app now has 23m users, up from 17m this May.

The founder also interestingly said the app was growing strongly in South America, particularly in Sao Paolo, and has 6% penetration in Oslo.

In terms of future plans, the CEO said Happn plans on finding “new ways” to monetise and that the dating app will be releasing a brand new, top secret feature in Q2 of next year.

Rappaport said: “We’ll have a game-changing announcement in the second quarter of next year. We can’t talk about it — because competition is too intense in this industry — but it’s a feature that will really set us apart.

“We were the first mover when it came to hyper-location; we can do the same in other areas.”
